The Crash - April 2000
On the 24th of April, 2000, at 9:30pm I was involved in a hit and run
collision and left on the side of the road. The CHP were able to
identify the color, approximate make and year of the vehicle that hit
me from the bits and pieces which fell of the vehicle. An "ad" was run
in the local paper and on the local radio stations and within hours an
anonymous caller called and gave directions to the vehicle and driver.
The driver admitted that he'd hit me and ran, but didn't admit that he
was drunk; he has an extensive DUI arrest record. I also met the
"anonymous caller" in court later and am indebted to that person.
The driver of the vehicle served 16 months in state prison for
felony-hit-and-run but didn't have his driving priviledges suspended.
The handling of my case by the CHP and the Santa Clara DA's office was
professional and exemplary. Their investigative and prosecutorial
determination allowed them to apprehend and successfully prosecute
the driver.
