Lani and Dana in their favorite Pahoihoi formation. This is in the
middle of a vast recent lava flow (1980's, if memory serves). You can
see how the plants are already regaining a foothold. Janet discovered
lots of "Pele's hair" - fiberglass-like crystals of deep olive
green spun volcanic glass, in the cracks at the base of the formations
in this flow. Once we knew where to look, we saw it all over!
